Essential Travel Information
Everything you need to know for your Nakuru adventure
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Nakuru is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to February. During these months, wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around water sources, and the weather is generally sunny and pleasant—perfect for game drives and birdwatching. The wet seasons (March to May and November to December) bring lush scenery but may make some roads muddy and wildlife harder to find.
Weather & Climate
Nakuru enjoys a moderate, temperate climate due to its high elevation (~1,850 meters). Daytime temperatures typically range from 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F), while nights can be cooler, dropping to around 10°C to 14°C (50°F to 57°F). The region experiences two rainy seasons: the long rains from March to May and the short rains in November and December. The dry seasons (June to October and January to February) offer the best weather for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities.
Currency & Language
The official currency used in Nakuru is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). Most businesses accept cash, and major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger establishments. The primary languages spoken are English and Swahili, making communication easy for travelers from around the world. Local communities also speak various Kenyan indigenous languages.
Visa Requirements
As of January 2024, Kenya has eliminated traditional visa requirements for most international travelers. Instead, visitors are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before entering the country. This policy applies to all travelers except those from East African Community (EAC) member states and a few other exempted countries
